Report of the symposium held at the Castle of Chiaramonte Favara

The issue of energy efficiency in historic buildings in the center of a conference held at the Castle of Chiaramonte in Favara within the project of cross-border cooperation CRIM-Safri (Italy-Malta 2007-2013).

The work of developing of the immense historical and artistic heritage of historic buildings national passes through increased energy efficiency. This was the theme of the conference which was held Thursday, June 26 in Favara in the conference hall of the Castle Chiaramonte (castle built around 1280 by Frederick II of the noble family of Chiaramonte). The restoration of historic buildings should be targeted and pose several constraints, so they require studies and analysis by different experts that combine their skills in order to achieve the optimal solution for each building with a significant reduction in energy consumption. Restoring a historic building means, in fact, contribute to the conservation and enhancement of the national cultural heritage. Restore it in a new energetic key means to reduce energy consumption and protect the environment. The retrofit is, however, a priority that has to deal with a flawed legislation. These uncertainties are an additional obstacle to the protection and preservation of historic buildings, for which there is a need to reconcile the energy restructuring with respect of the original wrapping and its formal balance. The speakers have hit the aim of combining sustainability and conservation, energy efficiency and protection of historic properties through a reinterpretation of the restoration able to define new areas of expressive balance between history and new technologies. The conference provided an opportunity for a comparison aimed to shed light on innovative solutions to harmonize the critical issues that arise from the need for the redevelopment of the facilities and the housing in relation to the constraints of conservation of buildings of historical value. Some speakers emphasized the importance of boosting development of a different energy model from the current one that focuses on renewable energy but also the energy efficiency and support him with technological innovation in the logic of giving attention to the energy supply chain technology produced in Sicily, considerably reducing energy imports from abroad, but also spreading on the citizens a greater sensitivity on encouraging good behavior also for the efficiency of energy saving. The conference illustrated the positive effects in terms of energy savings, expectations about the recent regulations being finalized, the clarifications on the modalities of intervention and the prospects opened up by a new landscape of emerging technologies and products. Was presented the project Factor20 (actions to implementation sustainable energy) and the case-study of the City of Castelbuono where the application of all retrofitting measures (the set of all the actions taken on the building in terms of structural and engineering, to save energy and thus reducing the consumption) adopted in residential buildings have allowed a primary energy savings between 22% and 30% and with regard to CO2 emissions savings induced between 23% and 30%.
After the greetings of the Arch. Vincenzo Agro, Deputy of the City of Favara, Vice President of Agrigento Chamber of Commerce Dr. Alessio Lattuca, Arch. Giovanni Salemi (Regional Ministry of Land and Environment), Ing. Roberto Sannasardo (Department for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity) and Dott. Carmelo Messina (Medoro scarl) interventions followed, moderated by Prof. Ferdinando Trapani (Urbanist of Polytechnic School of Palermo), rapporteurs: the Prof. Valerio Lo Brano (University of Palermo), the Dott. Michele Buffa (regional Department for cultural Heritage) and Ing. Francesco Cappello (ENEA – National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Development). The conference was attended by companies operating in the energy sector, public administrations, professionals, business people, professional bodies and associations for the protection and enhancement of the environment.
